What is "stripping"?

Stripping is a linguistic phenomenon where part of a sentence is omitted for emphasis, usually involving the removal of a repeated element while retaining the core meaning. This often occurs in responses to questions or statements. For example, in the exchange "Do you like apples?" a stripped response might be "I do," omitting the repeated phrase "like apples." Another example is "I enjoy hiking, but my brother does not enjoy hiking" being stripped to "I like hiking, but my brother does not."
