What is a "slipped disc"?

A slipped disc, also known as a herniated or ruptured disc, occurs when one of the soft, gel-like cushions, called discs, between the bones in the spine pushes out through a tear in the outer layer. This can irritate nearby nerves and cause pain, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg.
