What is a "loggerhead"?
Loggerhead is a species of marine turtle found in various parts of the world's oceans. It is named for its large head, which is proportionally larger than other sea turtle species. Loggerheads have a reddish-brown shell and powerful jaws, allowing them to feed on a diet consisting mainly of bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as crabs and mollusks. They are known for their long migrations, traveling hundreds or even thousands of kilometers between feeding and nesting areas. Loggerhead turtles play an important role in marine ecosystems as they help maintain the health of seagrass beds and coral reefs. However, they face numerous threats, including habitat loss, pollution, and accidental capture in fishing gear. Conservation efforts are in place to protect and conserve these magnificent creatures for future generations.
