What is "neuralgia"?
Neuralgia describes a sharp, stabbing, or burning pain along a nerve. This pain can occur anywhere in the body but is commonly felt in the face, neck, or lower back. It is often caused by irritation or damage to the nerve, which can result from conditions like multiple sclerosis, diabetes, shingles, or injury. The pain of neuralgia can be irregular or constant and may be triggered by simple actions like touching the affected area or even by changes in temperature. Treatment typically involves medications to manage pain as well as physical therapy or nerve blocks in some cases. In more severe cases, surgery may be considered to relieve pressure on the affected nerve.
