What is a "crenel"?
A crenel is a notch or opening at the top of a wall, particularly in fortifications like castles. These notches are typically part of a design called crenellation, which consists of alternating high and low sections along the top of a wall. The higher parts are called merlons, and the lower parts are the crenels. This design allows defenders to protect themselves while shooting or throwing objects at attackers from behind the wall.
