What is "uterine prolapse"?

Uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus moves down from its normal position and presses into the vagina. This can happen due to weakened pelvic muscles and tissues, often as a result of childbirth, aging, or other factors that strain the pelvic floor, which is a group of muscles and tissues that support the pelvic organs. Symptoms of uterine prolapse can include a feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvis, discomfort during intercourse, and urinary problems such as leakage or difficulty emptying the bladder. Treatment options may include pelvic floor exercises, the use of a pessary, which is a device inserted into the vagina to support the uterus, or surgery to repair the displacement.
