What is the "Atkins Diet"?
The Atkins Diet is a low-carbohydrate dietary approach developed by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1960s. It emphasizes high protein and fat intake while restricting carbohydrates, particularly refined carbohydrates like sugar, flour, and grains. The diet is divided into four phases: the Induction Phase, where carbohydrate intake is severely restricted to induce a metabolic state where the body burns fat for fuel; the Ongoing Weight Loss Phase, where carbohydrate intake is gradually increased to find the individual's carbohydrate tolerance level; the Pre-Maintenance Phase, where carbohydrate intake is further increased to reach a goal weight; and the Maintenance Phase, where the individual maintains their weight by adopting a sustainable level of carbohydrate intake. The Atkins Diet claims to promote weight loss, stabilize blood sugar levels, and improve overall health. However, critics argue that the diet may be high in saturated fats and low in essential nutrients, and its long-term effects on health are still debated.
