What is "tenseness"?

Tenseness refers to the degree of muscle tension and effort involved in producing certain vowel sounds. In phonetics, vowels can be classified as tense or lax based on this characteristic. Tense vowels, such as the "ee" sound in "see" and the "oo" sound in "food," are produced with greater tension in the tongue and often occur in longer or more prominent forms.
