What is "tonsil"?

arrow

The tonsil refers to a pair of lymphoid tissue masses located at the back of the throat on each side. They play a role in the body's immune system by helping to trap and filter harmful bacteria and viruses that enter through the mouth and nose. The tonsils produce antibodies and immune cells to fight off infections. Although they can sometimes become infected themselves, leading to conditions like tonsillitis, the tonsils are an important part of the body's defense against pathogens.
