What is a "dassie rat"?
Dassie rat, also known as rock hyrax or rock dassie, is a small mammal native to Africa and the Middle East. Despite its name, it is not a rat but rather belongs to a separate family called Procaviidae. Dassie rats are known for their unique appearance, resembling a cross between a rodent and a small rock-dwelling ungulate. They have a plump body, short legs, and a short tail, with dense fur that can range in color from gray to brown. Dassie rats have rounded ears and large, dark eyes. They are well-adapted to rocky habitats, with padded feet that help them grip and climb rocks and navigate steep slopes. They are social animals and live in colonies, often in rock crevices or crevices of buildings, and are known for their vocalizations, including distinctive calls and vocal duets. Dassie rats are herbivores, primarily feeding on plant material such as leaves, fruits, and flowers.
