What is "Tourette syndrome"?
Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, involuntary movements and vocalizations known as tics. These tics can range from mild to severe and can include motor tics, such as blinking, shrugging, or jerking movements, and vocal tics, such as grunting, throat clearing, or shouting out words. Tourette syndrome usually begins in childhood and often improves in adulthood, though some individuals may continue to experience symptoms throughout their lives. The exact cause of Tourette syndrome is unknown, but it is believed to involve abnormalities in certain brain regions and neurotransmitters. Treatment for Tourette syndrome typically involves a combination of behavioral therapy, medications to help manage symptoms, and support from healthcare professionals and family members.
