What is "schlemm's canal"?
Schlemm's canal, also known as the trabecular meshwork, is a circular channel located in the eye's anterior chamber angle. It plays a crucial role in the drainage of aqueous humor, the fluid that nourishes the cornea and maintains intraocular pressure. Schlemm's canal acts as a drainage pathway, allowing excess fluid to flow out of the eye and maintain a healthy balance of intraocular pressure. It is lined with specialized endothelial cells and is surrounded by a network of trabecular meshwork, which filters and regulates the outflow of aqueous humor. Dysfunction or blockage of Schlemm's canal can lead to increased intraocular pressure and contribute to the development of glaucoma.
