What is a "caiman"?

A caiman is a reptile similar to an alligator or crocodile, but smaller in size. They are native to Central and South America and are known for their armored bodies, powerful jaws, and sharp teeth. Caimans primarily inhabit freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, and swamps. They are opportunistic predators, feeding on a variety of prey including fish, amphibians, birds, and small mammals. While caimans may resemble their larger relatives, they are generally less aggressive and pose a lower threat to humans. Despite this, they are still formidable predators in their own right and play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats.
