What is an "HPV infection"?
An HPV infection, or human papillomavirus infection, is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the virus named human papillomavirus. HPV can infect the skin and moist linings of the body, like those found in the genital area, mouth, and throat. Many people with HPV infection may not experience any symptoms and can clear the infection on their own without treatment. However, some types of HPV can cause genital warts or lead to more serious health problems such as cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, or oropharyngeal cancers. HPV infections are usually spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex, as well as through skin-to-skin contact. Vaccines are available to prevent HPV infection and its associated health problems.
