What is a "back pass"?

A back pass is a pass in soccer where a player sends the ball to a teammate who is positioned behind them. It is usually played to help maintain possession or reset the attack, often when the player does not have an immediate opportunity to move forward. Back passes are typically short and controlled to ensure that the ball remains in the team’s possession and does not get intercepted by the opponent. The goalkeeper may also receive a back pass, but in this case, they are not allowed to handle the ball with their hands unless the pass comes from a teammate’s foot.
