What is a "counterguard"?
A counterguard is a type of fortification designed to protect the main walls of a castle or fort by providing an additional layer of defense. It is typically a low structure or earthwork built in front of the main walls, creating an additional layer of defense. Counterguards often have a triangular or trapezoidal shape and may include features such as ditches, parapets, or openings for firing weapons. By placing a counterguard in front of the main walls, defenders can better protect the structure from sieges or assaults, providing a strategic advantage.
