What are "Italic languages"?
Italic languages are a branch of the Indo-European language family that includes several ancient and modern languages primarily spoken in the Italian Peninsula. The most prominent language in this group is Latin, which was the language of ancient Rome and evolved into the Romance languages, including Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian. Other ancient Italic languages include Oscan and Umbrian, which were spoken by various tribes in Italy before the rise of Roman dominance. Italic languages are characterized by a range of phonetic, grammatical, and lexical features that have influenced the development of many European languages. The study of Italic languages offers insights into the history and cultural evolution of the Italian Peninsula and the spread of Latin and its descendants throughout Europe.
