What is "epilepsy"?
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by repeated seizures, which are sudden and brief changes in the brain's electrical activity that can cause a variety of symptoms. Seizures can vary widely in how they appear and their intensity, ranging from brief moments of unawareness or muscle jerks to sudden, uncontrollable movements and loss of consciousness. The underlying cause of epilepsy can vary and may include genetic factors, brain injury, infection, or structural abnormalities in the brain. Treatment for epilepsy typically involves medication to control seizures, although surgery or other therapies may be considered in some cases. While epilepsy cannot usually be cured, proper management can often help individuals lead normal lives with minimal problems from seizures.
