What is a "free throw"?
A free throw in basketball is an uncontested shot taken from the free-throw line, which is located 15 feet from the basket. It is awarded after certain fouls are committed by the opposing team. The player has one or more chances to score points by shooting the ball into the basket without any defense. Each successful free throw is worth one point.
