the sections of tracks without advanced signaling systems, relying instead on manual or basic signaling for train operation and safety
What is "dark territory"?
Dark territory refers to sections of a railway track that do not have any advanced signaling systems in place to monitor or control train movements. In these areas, there is no way to electronically track the location of trains or prevent them from colliding with each other. Operators must rely on manual methods, such as communication between train crews and dispatchers, to ensure safety. Dark territory is typically found in less busy or remote areas where the cost of installing signaling equipment may not be justified. It is considered a safety risk, so many railways are working to install modern signaling systems in these zones.
