a garment made of strong material that is designed to restrain a person's arms, making it difficult or impossible for them to move
What is a "straitjacket"?
A straitjacket is a garment made of strong fabric or leather used to restrain a person's body by binding their arms and sometimes their legs. It consists of long sleeves with attached straps or ties that fasten behind the back, preventing the person from moving their arms freely. Straitjackets were initially developed as a form of restraint for mentally ill patients who exhibited violent behavior or had a risk of self-harm. Although they are not commonly used in modern psychiatric treatment, straitjackets are still sometimes used as a security measure in correctional facilities or by law enforcement to restrain individuals who pose a danger to themselves or others. The use of straitjackets is controversial, and some mental health advocates argue that they can be psychologically harmful and should only be used as a last resort.
