a black cap with a stiff square top and a tassel, worn as a sign of academic achievement
What is a "mortarboard"?
A mortarboard is a type of academic headgear that is worn during graduation ceremonies in many countries. It consists of a flat square board, traditionally made of black felt, with a tassel attached to the top. The board is usually worn horizontally on the head, with the tassel hanging down from one side. The mortarboard has become a symbol of academic achievement and is commonly associated with higher education. It is typically worn by graduates, but can also be worn by faculty and other academic officials during academic ceremonies. The origin of the mortarboard can be traced back to the Middle Ages when it was worn by scholars and teachers as a symbol of their profession.
