What is a "double bass"?

A double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched stringed instrument in the violin family. It has a tall, hollow wooden body and four strings that are tuned in perfect fourths. The instrument is played either by drawing a bow across the strings or by plucking them. Due to its size, the double bass is typically played while standing or sitting on a high stool.
