What are "Tucanoan languages"?
Tucanoan languages are a family of Indigenous languages spoken primarily in the Amazon rainforest, particularly in parts of Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador. This family includes languages such as Tucano, Desano, and Cubeo. Tucanoan languages are known for their complex grammatical structures, including noun classifiers and detailed verb conjugation systems, as well as their tonal nature, where pitch can change the meaning of words. These languages are spoken by communities that traditionally practice exogamy, where individuals marry outside their linguistic group, which has led to widespread multilingualism. The study of Tucanoan languages provides insights into the linguistic diversity of the Amazon region, the social and cultural practices of the Indigenous peoples, and their adaptations to the rainforest environment.
