What are " Job's tears"?
Job's tears, also known as coix seeds or Chinese pearl barley, are the seeds of the Coix lacryma-jobi plant, which belongs to the grass family Poaceae. Native to Southeast Asia but cultivated in various regions worldwide, Job's tears are valued for their culinary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. These small, round seeds are rich in protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and have a hard, pearly-white outer layer and are typically cooked and consumed in a manner similar to grains. Job's tears are commonly used in Asian cuisines to make porridges, soups, desserts, and beverages. They have a mild, nutty flavor and a chewy texture when cooked. In addition to their culinary uses, Job's tears are also utilized in traditional medicine for their potential health benefits, including supporting digestion, promoting weight loss, and reducing inflammation. Furthermore, Job's tears are sometimes used in crafts, jewelry-making, and ornamental plantings due to their distinctive appearance.
