an etching technique that involves creating a tonal range on a metal plate by exposing it to an acid-resistant resin that is then heated
What is "aquatint"?
Aquatint is a printmaking technique used to create tones and gradients in an image, resembling watercolor or wash effects. In this method, a metal plate is coated with a fine layer of powdered resin, which is then heated to make it stick. The plate is then exposed to acid, which etches around the resin particles, creating areas of varying texture and depth. After inking the plate and wiping off the excess, the inked areas are pressed onto paper to produce prints with subtle gradations of tone. Aquatint is often used in combination with other techniques to achieve rich, detailed prints.
