Bathroom queen is a slang term that appeared in the mid-20th century in American English, mainly in urban gay subcultures. It refers to a person who regularly visits public restrooms to look for anonymous sexual encounters. The term grew out of a time when gay men had very few safe or legal places to meet, so restrooms became covert meeting spots. While it describes a specific behavior, it was often used mockingly or dismissively, even within gay communities, to suggest desperation, secrecy, or poor judgment. Today the term is mostly historical and can sound shaming or outdated, especially when used outside discussions of that period.
