The tarsal gland refers to the specialized sebaceous glands found in the eyelids. These glands produce and secrete sebum, an oily substance, onto the surface of the eyelids. While they are often classified as exocrine glands due to their secretion onto an external surface, they are still considered a part of the endocrine system as they produce and release hormones involved in maintaining the health and lubrication of the eyes.
