Two-wheel drive (2WD) is a system in vehicles where power is delivered to only two of the four wheels, usually the front or rear wheels. In this system, the engine powers either the front wheels, named front-wheel drive, or the rear wheels, called rear-wheel drive, to move the vehicle. Two-wheel drive is commonly found in many cars and light trucks, offering better fuel efficiency and simpler mechanics compared to four-wheel drive. However, it may offer less traction in challenging driving conditions like snow, mud, or gravel, where all-wheel or four-wheel drive would be more effective.
