What is a "nightjar"?
Nightjar is a mysterious and nocturnal bird known for its cryptic plumage, unique vocalizations, and remarkable aerial acrobatics. Found in various regions across the world, nightjars are typically active during the twilight hours, dusk, and dawn. Their soft, mottled feathers provide exceptional camouflage against tree bark or leaf litter, allowing them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings. Nightjars are famous for their haunting calls, which range from a repetitive churring sound to an eerie "churr-weeoo" or "chop-churr" that resonates through the night. These vocalizations are often associated with their courtship displays and territorial calls. Nightjars are superb aerial hunters, relying on their large mouths and agile flight to catch flying insects on the wing.
