The fielder in this position stands a bit further from the batter, closer to the edge of the field. The fine leg fielder is ready to stop or catch balls hit in this direction, especially those that might go low or along the ground. The role of the fine leg fielder is to either catch the ball or prevent it from crossing the boundary line for four runs.
